After Hurricane Irene, what do you think?

Once again, gratitude is given to the many who actively were involved with the energetically organized prayer groups and conventional prayers that went out towards Irene to calm her massive power.  Although, there were people who perished, millions without electric and physical damage to public and personal property we must still take a moment and remind ourselves that we are truly blessed that Hurricane Irene was downgraded to a tropical storm, rather than it being catastrophic towards the entire East Coast.

I actually enjoy hurricanes. Being based out of South Florida, I have plenty of experience with these destructive natural forces of nature. However,  I have always found that when a hurricane hits we are without power, there is much damage, it is costly and there is a lot of clean up to be done. But, the reason I like hurricanes is during and after a large storm, there are no T.V’s for distraction,  nobody coming and going. Instead, families are embracing each other and or harboring friends and loved ones to find a place of safety and security. We pass time by playing games by flashlight or candle light,  telling stories and sharing memories. The children see it as an adventure, something exciting and although, at times I have to say it has been scary, there is a feeling of security and love that bonds us and brings us together.  I find that during a hurricane everything just kind of stops for a day or two.  There is a sense of community and rekindled friendship between neighbors.  Looking around you will find people sharing food, cleaning each others yards and working together to help those that are indeed struggling or ill prepared. I think that this might make us recollect how small and insignificant we are to the vast energy of Mother Earth, realizing that maybe we should take a step back and remember to be thankful for the simple things we have in our life, which is…each other.

The question is:  Why does it take devastation for us to come together as a community? I wold love to hear your comments.
